Non è infrequente vedere l' “honey badger” (tasso del miele o ratele) aggirarsi nei campi dei safari, soprattutto la sera, per frugare nell'immondizia, riuscendo anche ad aprire pesanti bidoni a prova di furto. Molto intelligente, aggressivo, combattivo, non teme nessuno ed è bene starne alla larga. Si nutre di piccoli mammiferi, di uova, di rettili, di insetti, che stana con una frenetica opera di scavo nella quale cambia continuamente e improvvisamente direzione, cosa che rende molto difficile fotografarlo. In zone aride come il Kgalagadi, parte sud del Kalahari, si assiste a un' interessante simbiosi tra l' honey badger e il Goshawk (Astore cantante pallido), che si tiene nei paraggi dello scavo pronto, molto opportunisticamente, a sfilargli qualsiasi preda che riuscisse a fuggire alle sue lunghe e acuminatissime unghie. Pronto anche a fare un rapido balzo indietro, just in case…
