La chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione al Foro Romano situata ai piedi della rupe Tarpea, strada corrispondente all'antico vico iugario v'erano i granari dei Mattei patrizi romani. Nel portico di quelli v'era un'immagine della s. Vergine, alla quale raccomandandosi una pia madre il cui figlio innocente era stato carcerato e condannato a morte per malefizi, la Vergine gli disse, consolandola, che il figlio non sarebbe morto, ma miracolosamente salvo dalle forche. La chiesa dunque, costruita nella seconda metà del XV secolo e fu chiamata «della consolazione» per consolare i condannati a morte, le cui sentenze venivano eseguite fino al 1550 nella vicina Rupe Tarpea; venne adornata internamente con dipinti di Antoniazzo Romano e affiancata, nel 1475, da un ospedale affidato alla confraternita laicale di Santa Maria delle Grazie.
