Incontrare un leopardo è sempre molto speciale. Incontrarlo a tu per tu per tre giorni di fila è eccezionale quanto l'allineamento dei pianeti. È andata così. Eravamo a Bitterpan, uno dei piccoli campi non recintati nella parte sudafricana del Kgalagadi. Solo quattro piccoli chalet, 8 posti in tutto e un ranger. Ci si arriva da Nossob, 50 km. di dune, percorribili solo in un senso, e se ne esce con altri 50 per arrivare a Mata-Mata. È metà pomeriggio quando arrivano gli ultimi ospiti. Ci dicono di aver visto un leopardo con la sua preda su un albero, vicino alla strada, una trentina di chilometri prima. Al campo non deve arrivare più nessuno e ci viene permesso di tornare “contromano” verso Nossob. Le indicazioni sono perfette. Il leopardo è ancora lì. Ha trascinato la sua preda, un giovane orice grande quanto lui, a diversi metri da terra ed è in un momento di relax. Ci fissa per un po', scende dall'albero e si avvicina per studiarci meglio. È a pochi metri da noi. Si accuccia, continuando a fissarci con quel suo sguardo che seduce ed incatena. Poi si alza, annusa le ruote della nostra macchina, ci gira intorno e infine si stende sulla strada su cui dovremo passare. Enzo ed io siamo senza fiato per l'emozione, soli con lui per quasi un'ora, finché non si allontana. Una preda così grossa non la si mangia in un giorno, ci diciamo. Torniamo il giorno successivo e l'altro ancora. Lui è lì che ci aspetta…
