L'Arctia villica è un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia delle Erebidae. Questa specie compie una sola generazione all'anno, il bruco trascorre l'inverno nascosto tra la vegetazione nutrendosi, solo nelle ore più calde del giorno, di tarassaco, ortiche e more. Ha la testa rossa e il corpo marrone scuro ricoperto da folti peli più chiari, cresce fino a raggiungere i 5cm di lunghezza. In primavera, tra aprile e maggio, compie la metamorfosi costruendo, nel terreno o tra la vegetazione, un riparo trasparente di seta, dentro il quale si trasforma in crisalide, dalla colorazione marrone. La farfalla ha abitudini notturne e può essere chiamata falena, gli farfallamenti avvengono in circa 2 o 3 settimane, tra maggio e giugno a seconda del periodo di impupamento e del clima della stagione. Iniziano subito a volare, nutrendosi di nettare con la loro spirotromba e dando inizio alla stagione degli accoppiamenti. Le uova vengono deposte sulle foglie delle piante nutrici e si schiudono in circa 2 settimane se il clima è caldo, iniziando così un nuovo ciclo. La testa e il torace delle falene sono neri mentre l'addome è giallo, le ali anteriori sono nere con macchie bianche, quelle posteriori sono gialle con macchie nere all'estremità; la grandezza e il numero delle macchie varia per ogni esemplare. Le femmine sono più grandi dei maschi, hanno l'addome più arrotondato e le antenne filiformi, quelle dei maschi invece sono pettinate. La durata della loro vita è di circa due mesi, ma varia molto con il clima, che con il vento forte e le piogge può causare la morte di numerosi esemplari. Era una silenziosa notte di fine maggio, dopo quasi tre settimane di continui temporali avevo finalmente ricominciato le esplorazioni notturne. C'era molta umidità e un leggero vento, la temperatura si aggirava intorno ai 12 gradi. Su un fiore di camomilla, questo bellissimo esemplare maschio cercava di proteggersi dal vento, faceva molta fatica a restare aggrappato così ho posizionato uno dei miei ombrellini fotografici per tentare di fermare il vento. In questa foto, scattata ad alto ingrandimento, potete osservare la bellissima colorazione rossa e arancione del torace, sono ben visibili anche gli occhi composti, le antenne pettinate e la spirotromba arrotolata. Dopo averla osservata e fotografata per circa mezz'ora, mi sono allontanato lasciando lì l'ombrellino fino alle prime luci del giorno, quando sono ritornato, la falena era già volata via.
