La cicala del frassino o cicala media. Le cicale adulte depongono le uova in estate, che si schiuderanno a fine estate o in autunno. Mentre la loro vita da adulte dura solo circa un mese e mezzo per la riproduzione, le larve vivranno per diversi anni sottoterra, nutrendosi dei succhi delle radici delle piante. Questi insetti, che trascorrono la maggior parte della loro vita sottoterra nutrendosi della linfa delle radici degli alberi, emergono tutti insieme ogni 13 o 17 anni, a seconda della specie. Il ciclo di Magicicada septendecim è, come già detto, di 13 o 17 anni (attenzione a questo dettaglio). 13 e 17 sono i numeri primi e, in quanto tali, sono divisibili solamente per 1 o per sé stesso. Se le cicale, invece che un ciclo di 17, avessero un ciclo vitale di 15 anni, i loro predatori con cicli di 3 o 5 anni potrebbero sincronizzarsi e mettersi al passo con le cicale ogni 5 o 3 generazioni. L'impossibilità dei predatori di sincronizzarsi, avendo come unica alternativa l'attesa di 17 anni (mica poco nel regno animale), frutto di un vero e proprio colpo di genio dell'evoluzione, fa in modo che le cicale subiscano molte meno perdite. Ad esempio, se un predatore ha il ciclo di riproduzione di 5 anni loro si incroceranno solo ogni 85 anni!...
