Sono passati già 3 mesi da quando ho iniziato le esplorazioni notturne, il tempo scorre velocemente e io, sempre impegnato ad osservare la natura, quasi non me ne accorgo. L'Agrius convolvuli è un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia Sphingidae. Questa specie compie due generazioni all'anno, la prima vola tra maggio e giugno, la seconda tra luglio e settembre. Il suo ciclo vitale inizia in primavera, alla giusta temperatura, le falene sfarfallano dopo aver trascorso tutto l'inverno nella crisalide. Dopo l'accoppiamento, la femmina depone fino a 200 uova una ad una sulle foglie delle piante nutrici appartenenti alla famiglia Convolvulaceae. Sono ricoperte da una sostanza appiccicosa e rimangono attaccate alle foglie, inizialmente sono verdi ma durante lo sviluppo diventano gialle. I piccoli bruchi nascono dopo circa 10 giorni, misurano pochi millimetri ma crescono molto in fretta, da 2 a 4 settimane a seconda della temperatura. Appena nati sono tutti verdi ma dopo la seconda muta la colorazione può cambiare e diventare marrone o nera, gli esemplari con colorazioni scure mangiano solo di notte nascondendosi nel buio mentre quelli verdi si mimetizzano tra la vegetazione e si nutrono anche di giorno. Come altre specie della famiglia Sphingidae, fin da piccoli hanno nella parte posteriore del corpo un corno di colore nero per simulare una seconda testa con lo scopo di spaventare o disorientare i predatori. Diventati adulti, abbandonano le piante nutrici e camminano nel terreno alla ricerca di un luogo adatto dove compiere la metamorfosi, percorrendo anche diverse centinaia di metri. Scavano un cunicolo nel terreno fino a 15cm di profondità e costruiscono una celletta in cui, dopo 2 giorni, si trasformano in crisalide. La crisalide, di colore marrone, è lunga pochi cm con una particolare caratteristica che la distingue: la spiritromba, leggermente arrotolata, esce fuori dalla crisalide ed è rivestita da un particolare involucro. I bruchi della prima generazione compiono la metamorfosi in circa due settimane. Tra luglio e agosto avviene la seconda generazione, i bruchi diventano adulti in autunno e restano tutto l'inverno nella crisalide, pronti ad iniziare un nuovo ciclo l'anno successivo. Purtroppo sopportano con difficoltà il freddo, quindi nei mesi invernali se le temperature sono molto basse non riescono a sopravvivere. La farfalla ha abitudini notturne e può essere chiamata falena, ha il corpo molto robusto, con la sua apertura alare che può raggiungere i 12cm, è una delle specie più grandi in Italia e può volare con molta agilità emettendo un particolare rumore causato dal loro sfregamento. Gli occhi sono molto grandi per consentirle un'ottima visione notturna, la testa e le ali sono di colore grigio e marrone, l'addome è bianco e sul dorso ha delle strisce con tonalità rosse, rosa, bianche e nere. La bellissima colorazione dorsale è visibile solo di notte quando la falena è in volo ad ali aperte, nelle ore diurne, quando si ferma a riposo sui rami alti degli alberi, chiude le ali lungo il corpo mimetizzandosi con il tronco. Come per altri lepidotteri, le femmine sono più grandi dei maschi, hanno le antenne più piccole e l'addome più arrotondato. La durata della loro vita è di circa un mese. Questa specie è piuttosto rara dalle mie parti, nonostante le continue esplorazioni non sono mai riuscito ad osservare il bruco. Le falene sono molto difficili da fotografare, a luglio e ad agosto le vedo sempre volare nel mio giardino per raccogliere il nettare dai fiori con la loro lunga spirotromba che può raggiungere i 10cm. Quest'anno la primavera è stata piovosa e gli animali hanno iniziato in ritardo il loro ciclo vitale estivo, sono sicuro quindi che si tratta di prime generazioni. Qualche giorno fa ho visto questo bellissimo esemplare che volava velocemente nell'orto, dopo qualche minuto si è posata tra i fiori di Mirabilis jalapa e mi sono avvicinato per fotografarla. C'era un vento costante molto fastidioso che muoveva tutte le piante e la falena restava con difficoltà aggrappata ad un rametto. Appena ha visto la luce della torcia ha iniziato a muoversi, sono riuscito a fotografarla per pochi secondi ad ali aperte con il dorso colorato visibile prima che iniziasse di nuovo il volo tra i fiori.
