Da più di un mese sto trascorrendo tutte le notti ad osservare le meraviglie della natura e sto documentando tante bellissime scene. Era inizio giugno, quella notte c'era un leggero vento e, non potendo fotografare con i treppiedi, decisi di proseguire a mano libera. Alle 3 di notte stavo esplorando l'orto e mentre osservavo i fiori delle zucchine ho incontrato questo maschio di Leptophyes punctatissima. Era nascosto su un fiore sotto le grandi e pungenti foglie, quando mi sono abbassato si è girato ad osservarmi muovendo le sue lunghe antenne. Questa specie appartiene alla famiglia Tettigoniidae, ha abitudini notturne ed è difficile osservarla perché si nasconde tra la vegetazione. Il suo ciclo vitale inizia a fine estate, quando le femmine depongono le uova nel terreno o nella corteccia degli alberi. Gli esemplari adulti non sopravvivono all'autunno ma le uova trascorrono tutto l'inverno al riparo in attesa della prossima primavera. Quando la temperatura è favorevole avviene la schiusa, le neanidi sono verdi con tanti puntini neri, da cui deriva l'aggettivo latino punctatissima. Appena nate iniziano a nutrirsi delle piante erbacee e diventano adulti durante l'estate grazie alle numerose mute. Le antenne sono lunghe il doppio del corpo e come per tutti i Tettigoniidae gli consentono di orientarsi e percepire la presenza dei predatori. Si muovono solo saltando perché le ali sono molto piccole e non adatte al volo, ma hanno un altro importantissimo compito. Durante il periodo degli accoppiamenti il maschio emette, con lo sfregamento dell'ala sinistra contro quella destra, un canto molto debole per attirare la femmina; è simile ad un cinguettio ed è appena percepibile dal nostro udito. In genere soltanto i maschi cantano, ma la femmina di questa specie è in grado di rispondere ai richiami del maschio con un canto ancora più debole per attirarlo verso di sé. Il dimorfismo sessuale è molto evidente. Le femmine sono verdi con due striature gialle ai lati della testa, hanno l'ovopositore, un organo a punta che le consente di deporre le uova in profondità. I maschi sono verdi con una lunga striatura marrone chiaro sul dorso e una striscia nera ai lati delle ali. Come altri ortotteri, anche questa specie possiede all'estremità dell'addome due piccole appendici, chiamate Cerci. Quelli del maschio sono incurvati verso l'interno e servono ad afferrare la femmina durante l'accoppiamento. Qualche giorno dopo ho trovato un altro esemplare, forse sempre lo stesso, che mi è saltato addosso mentre camminavo ed è rimasto sulla mia mano per più di un'ora, ma questo ve lo racconterò un'altra volta.
