Incontro spesso la Vanessa atalanta dalla primavera fino all'autunno mentre vola velocemente sui i fiori nelle ore diurne. Purtroppo non ero mai riuscito a fotografarla perché è una specie molto diffidente e appena mi avvicinavo volava via, non l'avevo mai vista nemmeno riposare tra i fiori durante le mie esplorazioni notturne. A novembre dello scorso anno, dopo aver osservato alcuni esemplari in volo, ho deciso di tentare un esplorazione nonostante il clima sfavorevole. Raramente in quel periodo esco di notte perché le temperature sono basse e il vento è forte, gli animali restano nascosti e molte specie sono in letargo. Quel giorno il tramonto è stato inaspettatamente bello con sfumature di rosso, anche se il vento e le nuvole nere erano sempre presenti. Il terreno era molto umido e fangoso a causa delle piogge dei giorni precedenti, in alcuni tratti si erano create anche delle pozze d'acqua. Quando è calata la notte, finalmente l'ho trovata. Stava riposando nascosta tra i fiori di Fatsia japonica, mi sono lentamente avvicinato ed è stata molto collaborativa, ho tagliato delicatamente il rametto e l'ho posizionato su un plamp. Purtroppo a causa del forte vento aveva molta difficoltà a restare aggrappata sul fiore, quindi mi sono spostato vicino a degli alberi e ho costruito un riparo usando un telo antipioggia che avevo con me. Era un po' nervosa e prima di fotografarla ho preferito lasciarla indisturbata nella sua nuova posizione, nel frattempo ho continuato ad esplorare i dintorni per qualche ora. Intanto ha iniziato a piovere, gli unici rumori presenti erano quelli dei tuoni e delle gocce che cadevano, in pochi minuti ero completamente bagnato. Appena ha smesso sono ritornato dalla vanessa, il riparo di fortuna l'ha protetta dalla pioggia e sono stato ad osservarla e fotografarla per più di un'ora. Alle 5 di mattina il vento è lentamente diminuito ma stava per arrivare un altro temporale, il cielo era coperto da nuvole nere e ogni tanto cadeva qualche goccia. Sono riuscito in quel momento a scattare delle macro ad alto ingrandimento che mostrano solo alcuni dettagli della farfalla, utilizzando tubi di prolunga e una luce led, ho notato che i flash le davano fastidio. Ho già pubblicato una foto che mostra dettagliatamente la testa della farfalla, ora vi descrivo un'altra particolarità. Le ali dei lepidotteri sono formate da piccolissime scaglie appiattite, che sono attaccate una vicino all'altra in appositi incavi nel tegumento. Ogni scaglia contiene i pigmenti che formano tante tonalità di colori. Altra interessante particolarità sono le vene, che dividono l'ala in tante zone, chiamate cellule. Queste venature hanno l'importantissimo compito di far scorrere l'emolinfa e grazie ad essa, la farfalla appena nata può distendere le ali. Per questi motivi le ali sono molto delicate e non vanno mai toccate per non danneggiarle e causare la morte dell'esemplare. Purtroppo le ali possono rovinarsi anche durante il volo, oppure a causa del vento e della pioggia; osservando la foto a piena risoluzione potete notare che questo esemplare in alcuni punti ha perso le scaglie a causa delle intemperie. Non volendo disturbarla ancora l'ho riportata di nuovo dove l'avevo trovata cercando di posizionarla in un punto più riparato e nascosto, poi mi sono incamminato verso casa. Subito dopo ha iniziato a piovere, la stanchezza si faceva sentire ma anche questa volta la natura mi aveva ripagato mostrandomi la sua bellezza.
