L'Arena di Nîmes è il fulcro di quella che è nota come la Roma francese. È uno degli anfiteatri meglio conservati al mondo e ogni anno attira un'ingente quantità di visitatori da ogni angolo del pianeta. Viene costruito verso la fine del I secolo e risente dell'architettura tipica dell'epoca Flavia: in primis la nota facciata suddivisa in due livelli di arcate e i diversi elementi di ordine tuscanico come i pilastri, le semicolonne e l'attico. L'Arena di Nîmes presenta una lunghezza di 133 metri e una larghezza di 101 metri, misure che ne fanno uno degli esemplari più imponenti quando si parla di anfiteatri romani come testimoniato dalla capienza di 13.000 persone (originariamente però i posti a sedere potevano ospitarne circa il doppio). Per cosa era utilizzato? Come è noto, questo genere di luoghi trova il suo scopo principale nell'accogliere i combattimenti dei gladiatori e gli altri giochi antichi per divertire la popolazione e fidelizzare le gerarchie imperiali. L'Arena di Nîmes però è sopravvissuta allo scorrere del tempo, un punto di svolta si ha nella seconda metà del XIX secolo quando viene totalmente sgomberato e riconvertito a teatro per ogni genere di spettacoli.
