Le origini dell'attuale Castello, definito anche “Castelletto”, sono strettamente collegate alla storia dell'altro castello, più imponente e più antico che si trovava sulla sommità del colle. Nel XIII secolo i signori di Artegna iniziarono la costruzione di un edificio, ampliando e trasformando le strutture poste all'ingresso (muro di cinta e torre di guardia). Sorse così quello che ora viene definito castrum inferius o castelletto, date le dimensioni ridotte rispetto al castello superiore. Questo nuovo complesso, di cui il muro portante e la torre risultano essere le parti più antiche, divenne la sede abitativa dei Signori d'Artegna, probabilmente nella seconda metà del XIII secolo. Rimase proprietà di questa casata fino al 1384, anno in cui morì l'ultimo discendente maschile del ramo principale della famiglia, il castelletto passò quindi per via ereditaria femminile alla famiglia dei Savorgnano. Quasi completamente distrutto nel 1387 per contrasti intercorsi tra gli Artegna, gli Udinesi, i Gemonesi ed il patriarca, e riedificato nel 1410 e nel 1418 per ordine del patriarca Lodovico di Teck, passò ai Savorgnan per via ereditaria femminile, subendo nel 1499 l'assalto dei Turchi.
