Ecco un altro ospite della mia oasi, incontrare il rospo per me è sempre una grande emozione. Il 31 maggio alle prime luci ero come al solito in esplorazione, la stanchezza si faceva sentire, non a causa dei km percorsi durante la notte, ma dalle poche ore di sonno che faccio ormai da circa due mesi. Le mie avventure naturalistiche di quest'anno sono appena iniziate e la natura premia sempre la mia ostinazione. All'improvviso ho visto, nascosta vicino alle radici di un grande ulivo, questa bellissima femmina di rospo. Si è fermata per circa 3 giorni nel sottobosco vicino alle mie pozze d'acqua nascondendosi tra l'erba alta, sono riuscito a fotografarla molte volte senza spaventarla. I rospi trascorrono l'inverno nascosti in buchi nei tronchi degli alberi, nel terreno o sotto le distese di foglie del sottobosco. In primavera escono dalle tane e si dirigono verso i fiumi, gli stagni e le pozze per accoppiarsi. Sono animali abitudinari, ricordano il posto in cui sono nati e ogni anno lo raggiungono per riprodursi, possono percorrere anche diversi km e devono cercare di sopravvivere a tanti pericoli. Oltre ai suoi predatori naturali, le natrici e alcune specie di uccelli, i rospi muoiono soprattutto a causa della siccità e della perdita di habitat. Quando sono nel mio giardino possono vivere tranquilli, con le pozze d'acqua ogni anno cerco di attirarli e di invogliarli a deporre qui le uova.
