Costretti in uno spazio limitato, gli ebrei veneziani si erano adattati a costruire case alte per sfruttare lo spazio a loro destinato, vivendo in locali angusti, dai soffitti bassi per poter usufruire di più piani: erano, in un certo senso, dei grattacieli! Ogni metro quadrato era prezioso, ed in una tale situazione non sempre ci si poteva permettere il lusso di scale che portavano da un piano all'altro: anche il vano scale doveva essere sacrificato a favore dello spazio abitativo.Così si trovò un ulteriore espediente, per sfruttare maggiormente lo spazio limitato: costruire una "scala-non-scala, una scala (in un certo senso) fittizia, una scala falsa, cioè... matta!" La scala "matta" consisteva in una specie di rampa senza parapetti e senza gradini in legno, una specie di piano inclinato interrotto ogni tanto da una specie di pianerottolo orizzontale dove si poteva sostare o entrare in un piano.
