La Chiesa è situata in uno degli angoli più belli di Roma, le pendici del colle Gianicolo di cui si affaccia ad uno stupendo panorama dell'antica Roma e sorge sul luogo dove secondo la tradizione l'apostolo Pietro, fu crocifisso sulla croce capovolta a testa in giù, nel punto esatto dove fu edificato il bellissimo Tempietto del Bramante, che ne rappresenta la particolarità di questa chiesa , che racchiude ricchissimi tesori d'arte. Richiestissima per celebrazioni di matrimoni, è adiacente alla fontana dell'acqua paola e all'arco di S.Pancrazio. La chiesa è abbellita da capolavori di eminenti artisti del XVI e XVII secolo. Tra i pittori e scultori che hanno dato il loro contributo ci sono i nomi come Giorgio Vasari, Raffaello, Sebastiano del Piombo, Baldassarre Peruzzi della scuola di Pinturicchio, Giulio Mazzoni, Bartolomeo Ammannati. La seconda cappella sulla sinistra, la Cappella Raimondi (1640), fu disegnata da Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
