Con la visita al Salone dei Cinquecento termina il percorso ed il reportage fotografico, vi ringrazio per il seguito che mi riservate. La crisi della Repubblica portò alla fine del Quattrocento alla decisione di costruire nel Palazzo della Signoria una grande sala, oggi chiamata Salone dei Cinquecento, che permettesse la riunione di un Maggior Consiglio. A promuovere l'impresa fu Girolamo Savonarola, allora deus ex machina della vita politica della Repubblica. Fu fatto costruire nel 1494 dal Savonarola che aveva rimpiazzato i Medici alla guida di Firenze e qui volle tenere le riunioni del Consiglio Maggiore della Repubblica, composto appunto di 500 membri. Un solo anno, il 1494, fu necessario alla costruzione sotto la direzione di Simone del Pollaiolo, noto come il Cronaca. Uno sforzo eccezionale considerando la mole dei lavori. Fu infatti necessario aggiungere un intero corpo di fabbrica lungo tutto il lato est del Palazzo della Signoria esteso dall'odierna via della Ninna al lato della piazza retrostante la Fontana di Nettuno. Furono costruiti 14 possenti pilastri di sostegno, oggi visibili attraversando il cortile della Dogana, e fu realizzata al primo piano un'enorme sala comparabile solo con quella del Maggior Consiglio nel Palazzo Ducale di Venezia (53.50 lunghezza, 25 larghezza e 15,40 altezza). L'interno, in consonanza con i dettami di Savonarola, era privo di decorazioni. Con il completamento dei lavori nel 1497 si chiude la prima fase della vita di questo enorme spazio civico.
