Arrivando da una tortuosa stradina che gira intorno alla montagna, si apre una vista spettacolare sull'Abbazia di Senanque, un monastero cistercense immerso e circondato dai campi di lavanda. È uno degli esempi più affascinanti di architettura monastica, fondata nel 1148. Qui il silenzio e la pace regnano sovrani. Infatti, come quasi mille anni fa, l'Abbazia ospita una comunità di Fratelli Cistercensi che vivono secondo la Regola di San Benedetto. La comunità divide armoniosamente la sua vita tra preghiera, lectio divina e lavoro. Sette volte al giorno, la comunità si riunisce nella chiesa abbaziale per pregare. – Il monastero è aperto ai visitatori. Diversi edifici sono stati resi accessibili per mostrare il modo di vivere dei monaci cistercensi e le caratteristiche architettoniche dell'edificio. E' possibile visitare il dormitorio, il chiostro, la chiesa abbaziale, il locale caldaia e la sala capitolare. L'abbazia di Senanque e i suoi incantevoli campi di lavanda rappresentano una delle più famose immagini da cartolina della Provenza. Eppure, per lungo tempo, gli appezzamenti che circondavano l'abbazia furono adibiti a pascoli e terreni agricoli coltivati a patate e cereali, per garantire la sussistenza dei monaci dell'abbazia. Solamente dalla metà del XX ° secolo, i frati hanno iniziato la coltivazione di lavanda.
