La Mezquita o Moschea di Cordoba è un edificio affascinante che incarna i numerosi cambiamenti politici e religiosi che la città ha subito nel corso dei secoli e oggi è la Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. Costruita nel 785 dall'emiro Abd ar-Rahman I sul sito di una antica chiesa visigota, la Mezquita è opulenta e lussureggiante: mosaici d'oro, giganteschi archi con 856 colonne e giochi di luci si rincorrono lungo i 23 mila metri quadrati dell'edificio opera meravigliosa degli architetti islamici. L'ingresso principale è la trecentesca Puerta del Perdon in stile mudejar che si trova accanto al minareto mussulmano del IX secolo, la Torre del Alminar. All'interno si trova il magnifico Patio de los Naranjos, il cortile degli aranci, dal quale si accede alla sala di preghiera. Di fronte a questa porta si trova il mihrab, la nicchia di preghiera del muro qibla che indica la direzione della Mecca. Al centro dell'edificio si trova la cattedrale cristiana costruita nel XIII secolo, con una bella Capilla Mayor e un coro barocco del 1520. Di fronte al mihrab c'è la maksura, il luogo dove pregavano i califfi, le parti più decorati della moschea. Ad esempio il portale del mihrab è composto da 1600 chilogrammi di tessere da mosaico d'oro donate dall'imperatore cristiano di Bisanzio, Niceforo II Foca. Nel 1984 , il centro storico di Cordova, tra cui la Mezquita, è stato dichiarato Patrimonio mondiale dall'Unesco.
