L'Hyles euphorbiae è un lepidottero appartenente alla famiglia degli Sphingidae, un gruppo di farfalle con attività prettamente notturna. Si sviluppa in due generazioni all'anno, la farfalla depone le uova in primavera e a fine estate direttamente sulla pianta nutrice, l'Euphorbia, incollandoli a piccoli gruppi lungo il fusto con una sostanza appiccicosa. Sono di colore verde, la schiusa avviene in circa 15 giorni. Le larve inizialmente sono di colore scuro, iniziano subito a nutrirsi e inizialmente rimangono sempre in gruppo. Sono facilmente riconoscibili perché hanno un corno nella parte posteriore del corpo. Durante la crescita grazie alle 4 mute i colori si fanno sempre più accesi e possono variare a seconda dell'ambiente in cui vivono. Solitamente sono di colore verde, giallo e arancione con macchie bianche lungo il corpo. Nelle ultime fasi di crescita raggiungono notevoli dimensioni, sono immangiabili per i predatori perché assumono i principi tossici della pianta nutrice. Diventato adulto il bruco lascia la pianta nutrice e prepara la crisalide nel terreno. La metamorfosi avviene in circa due settimane nei mesi estivi, in autunno invece trascorrerà l'intero inverno nella crisalide e nascerà a primavera. Vola da maggio ad agosto, nutrendosi nelle ore crepuscolari del nettare dei fiori. Ho incontrato questa specie a settembre durante una delle mie esplorazioni notturne, prima ancora di vederla l'ho riconosciuta grazie al rumore delle sue ali in volo. Si posava costantemente sui fiori di Mirabilis jalapa per nutrirsi di nettare, non era il caso di disturbarla. Qualche ora dopo al sorgere del sole l'ho incontrata di nuovo tra l'erba, sono riuscito a farla posare delicatamente su un rametto e fotografarla per un'ora in varie angolazioni. Come sfondo ho usato la luce che filtrava tra gli alberi, il verde in basso sono i broccoli del mio terreno, che da poco erano iniziati a crescere.
