Una marcia di avvicinamento di alcuni chilometri ed ecco che il letto asciutto del fiume Auob si allarga e forma una radura dove pascolano diversi orici ed alcuni springboks, gazzelle saltanti, prede molto più accessibili. Il gruppo, una femmina adulta e tre giovani, avanza molto lentamente, con grande cautela, per portarsi abbastanza vicino da poter attaccare, perché i ghepardi sono velocissimi ma non hanno grande autonomia. L'erba alta li nasconde alla vista delle prede. Ogni tanto, come un periscopio, spunta una testa per controllare la situazione. Solo un attimo, poi scompare di nuovo. Ormai mancano pochi metri. La linea dei quattro si apre a formare un ventaglio ed è pronta a sferrare il suo attacco. Tutto sembra funzionare perfettamente, ma qualcosa, per noi impercettibile, mette in allarme gli springboks che schizzano via. I quattro accennano una reazione, ma è troppo tardi…
