Probabilmente la piccola chiesa di San Pietro, posta sul promontorio verso l'isola Palmaria, venne eretta su un antico tempio preesistente dedicato a Venere Ericina e su una pieve paleocristiana successiva. Nel 1256, Portovenere aiutò Genova nella conquista di Lerici contro Pisa e come ringraziamento i Genovesi decisero di costruire la chiesa. In stile gotico-genovese, venne terminata nel 1277. La Chiesa di San Pietro è il "cristiano tempio" citato da Eugenio Montale in una suggestiva poesia, dedicata a Porto Venere. PORTOVENERE Là fuoresce il tritone dai flutti che lambiscono le soglie d'un cristiano tempio, ed ogni ora prossima è antica. Ogni dubbiezza si conduce per mano come una fanciulletta amica.
