Melitaea athalia (Rottemburg, 1775) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Nymphalinae - Apertura alare: Da 3,1 a 4 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente nel settore orientale del Nord Italia dove tra Trentino, Veneto e Friuli Venezia Giulia è possibile che si ibridi con Melitaea celadussa. - Habitat: Prati, limitare di boschi e radure dalla pianura sino a 2200 m. - Periodo di volo: Univoltina quasi ovunque da maggio a metà agosto in base alla quota. In alcune località calde, ma non secche produce una seconda generazione che vola da metà agosto a settembre. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie specie essenze dei generi Plantago, Anthirrhinum, Veronica, Linaria e Melampyrum. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina leggermente più grande e con il colore fulvo più chiaro. - Variazioni: Si tratta di una specie molto variabile individualmente e anche localmente con popolazioni molto chiare ed altre prevalentemente scure. - Specie simili: Trattandosi, come detto sopra, di una specie molto variabile individualmente è difficile definire degli elementi peculiari per cui le si possono attribuire tutti gli individui che non presentano i caratteri specifici delle altre specie di Melitaea.
