Colonia sorge sulle sponde del Reno ed è la quarta città più grande della Germania. La sua storia secolare contribuisce a creare il caratteristico fascino della città, dove cattedrali e mercati antichi si mescolano a edifici e uffici moderni. È una rinomata località turistica, ma anche un centro commerciale e mediatico. La sua fama mondiale è legata alla nota Acqua di Colonia, prodotta qui a partire dal 1709. Colonia è stata una delle località più bombardate durante il conflitto, ma è stata anche oggetto di un'attenta opera di ricostruzione. Il centro storico, infatti, incluso il famoso Alter Markt è stato riportato al suo originario splendore, così come gli altri edifici sopravvissuti ai bombardamenti, come il rinomato Duomo di Colonia. Oggi la città è un famoso centro culturale e ospita anche uno dei carnevali più attesi di tutta la nazione. Grazie alle sue innumerevoli gallerie e a oltre 30 musei, la città offre ai suoi visitatori un ricco programma di eventi 365 giorni l'anno.
