Lo skateboarding, o semplicemente skateboard o skate, è un extreme sport, genere totalmente diverso dagli sport abituali nato in California circa negli anni '60. In un certo senso lo skateboarding è stato inventato per permettere ai surfisti di praticare il proprio sport anche in assenza di mare mosso. Se appreso con adeguata gradualità e praticato con precauzioni idonee (quali ginocchiere e gomitiere) e con l'aiuto di istruttori, è meno pericoloso di altri sport di massa, secondo statistiche americane. Può essere praticato dai 5 anni fino a tarda età, con l'approccio delle tecniche base di scorrimento, curva e fermata in sicurezza, meglio se sotto la guida di qualificati tecnici e istruttori federali e muniti dell'equipaggiamento di sicurezza-protezioni. Le specialità acrobatiche sono predilette dai teenager. Tutti gli amanti degli sport di glisse (scivolata) possono trovare nello skateboarding la disciplina più idonea alle loro capacità. Attualmente in Italia questo genere di attività è molto diffusa tra i più giovani ed è normalmente praticato per strada (street-skating) o in apposite aree predisposte chiamate skatepark o nei parchi pubblici.
