Il falco di palude è un uccello stanziale ed è possibile osservarlo in Europa, Asia, ed Africa. In Italia ci sono nidificazione sparse, si trovano nei canneti in prossimità di acquitrini e paludi. I nuclei più folti sono nella Pianura Padana, nel Salento, Calabria e in Sardegna.Rapace di medie dimensioni (apertura alare 115-135cm.) il Falco di palude, a dispetto del suo nome italiano, è un'albanella (Genere Circus); delle albanelle infatti mostra alcune caratteristiche quali zampe lunghe e sottili (gialle con unghie nere), coda ed ali lunghe e, in volo, volteggio e scivolata ad ali rialzate (a "V"). Il falco di palude presenta un evidente dimorfismo sessuale sia nelle dimensioni (femmine più grandi) sia nel piumaggio. I maschi adulti hanno ali più sottili, quasi interamente grigie ad eccezione delle punte, nere, e della parte più interna e anteriore (penne copritrici) marrone-crema di sopra, rossiccia di sotto; la coda è grigia, la testa e il petto color crema e il ventre bruno-rossiccio. Le femmine adulte sono quasi interamente marroni con coda più rossiccia, cappuccio, gola e "spalline" color camoscio-crema. I giovani al primo anno di vita, di entrambi i sessi, sono molto simili alle femmine adulte ma, nel complesso, più scuri e uniformi, con iride e becco scuri (negli adulti gialli). I maschi iniziano al secondo anno ad assumere il piumaggio da adulto, acquisito definitivamente solo al quarto inverno
