Il letto asciutto del fiume Auob, nella parte occidentale del Kgalagadi, è come un'autostrada per i ghepardi, che vi possono lanciare a tutta velocità i loro attacchi. È anche il luogo dove più facilmente possono trovare le loro prede - Springbok, otocioni e volpi del Capo, soprattutto - perché, sotto la superficie sabbiosa, c'è sempre abbastanza umidità da far crescere un po' d'erba. La fauna si è drasticamente ridotta in questi ultimi anni di grande siccità e i ghepardi percorrono ogni giorno diversi chilometri per trovare le loro prede. Per un bel po' ne seguiamo quattro, una femmina con i suoi tre figli sub-adulti, dalla strada sterrata che corre parallela all'Auob, ma li vediamo sempre di lato e da lontano. Così come, peraltro, fanno gli altri spettatori di questa scena. Non molti, per fortuna, perché il parco e' immenso ma ha pochi campi e una bassissima ricettivita'. Decidiamo di cambiare strategia e di provare ad anticiparli. A rischio di perdere il gruppo, torniamo indietro per un bel tratto di strada e ne prendiamo un'altra, più in alto, che dopo alcuni chilometri si ricongiunge alla prima e interseca l'Auob. Se la nostra supposizione è corretta, i ghepardi, prima o poi , passeranno di lì. Li vedremo spuntare dall'erba alta e li avremo di fronte. Saremo noi e loro…
