Incastonato come una gemma nella parete rocciosa del Monte Taleo, in prossimità di Subiaco, il Santuario del Sacro Speco da quasi mille anni custodisce uno dei luoghi più significativi della spiritualità benedettina: la grotta in cui all'inizio del VI secolo il giovanissimo San Benedetto da Norcia visse da eremita, seguendo l'esempio dei padri anacoreti. Attraverso il periodo di solitudine trascorso in questo luogo aspro e selvaggio, San Benedetto poté maturare quel carisma e quella spiritualità che in pochi anni lo portarono a fondare le prime comunità monastiche lungo la valle del fiume Aniene: l'embrione da cui si sarebbe sviluppato l'intero monachesimo occidentale. Ancora oggi, seppur circondata da straordinari capolavori architettonici e artistici sedimentati nei secoli, la grotta conserva il senso autentico della fuga mundi di San Benedetto, fondamento di ogni scelta di vita monastica. Sole a martello, ma una foto la dovevo fare comunque.
