Lo scarabeo rinoceronte (Oryctes nasicornis) è un coleottero della famiglia degli Scarabei. Il nome deriva dal suo evidente dimorfismo sessuale, i maschi hanno un corno rivolto all'indietro simile al rinoceronte. Le larve di scarabeo rinoceronte sono molto simili alle larve del maggiolino (Melolontha melolontha), ma queste sono del tutto innocue perchè non attaccano le radici delle piante vive. Si nutrono molto ma solo di legno morto e residui organici, contribuendo alla creazione dell'humus nel terreno. Solo le larve si alimentano. Lo scarabeo adulto non ha un apparato masticatore efficiente e quindi sopravvive grazie alle riserve di cibo accumulate da larva. Ha un ciclo di vita molto lungo che varia seconda dell'ambiente, può svolgersi anche nell'arco di 3 anni. Il volo degli adulti va dalla primavera all'estate. L'accoppiamento avviene a terra o a qualche cm di profondità. Depone circa 50 uova nel legno marcio o tra i detriti organici che si schiudono in circa 3 settimane. Ho avuto la fortuna di incontrare questo insetto ieri notte durante la mia ultima esplorazione notturna. Dalle mie parti è abbastanza raro ed è un insetto molto importante per l'ecosistema.
