Un aspetto che non tutti conoscono è che Mantova è attraversata da un canale: Mantova è città d'acqua, quasi una "seconda Venezia". E questa sensazione è completata dal Rio, canale mediovale, che offre molti scorci privilegiati nel centro città. Il Rio è un canale artificiale che il libero Comune fece realizzare da Alberto Pitentino nel 1190. Per poter portare a termine quest'opera, che doveva regolare le acque dei laghi con salti di quota, furono prosciugate e bonificate le paludi tra la Civitas Vetus e la Civitas Nova. In questo modo il nuovo canale divenne un vero e proprio fiume che attraversava la città e che fu usato moltissimo da commercianti e artigiani.
