Situata in Piazza del Popolo tra Via del Corso e Via di Ripetta, a nord dell'antico Campo Marzio, essa è una delle chiese “gemelle”, insieme a Santa Maria in Montesanto. La sua edificazione si deve a una leggenda che narra di un miracolo che si verificò sulle sponde del fiume di Roma. Il 20 giugno del 1325, una mamma disperata invocò la Madonna, dipinta su un muro lungo le rive del fiume, affinché salvasse il suo piccolo caduto nelle acque del Tevere. Una volta che il bambino fu messo in salvo, in ricordo dell'evento prodigioso, si decise l'edificazione di una cappella dedicata alla Vergine Maria nella quale venne collocata l'immagine miracolosa che da allora è conosciuta come Madonna dei Miracoli. Tale dipinto, posto sopra l'altare maggiore, è una copia realizzata nel cinquecento il cui originale si trova nella Chiesa di San Giacomo in Augusta in Via del Corso. A destra, nella cappella di S. Giuseppe, è collocata una statua della Madonna di Bétharram, copia eseguita da Gino Mazzini di un'opera realizzata da Alessandro Renoir il cui originale si trova in Francia, nel Santuario Nostra Signora di Bétharram.
