Nel 1878 alla morte del Re Vittorio Emanuele II, ( indicato come “Padre della Patria” dalla moderna storiografia), perché fautore dell'Unità l'Italia, viene bandito un concorso per dedicargli un monumento. Nel 1884 vince il concorso l'architetto Giuseppe Sacconi che, propone un monumento neoclassico, sulla scia dell'Altare di Pergamo o il Tempio della Fortuna Primigenia di Palestrina. Il progetto del Sacconi, ne prevede la collocazione lungo le pendici del Colle Capitolino, caratterizzato da scalinate, ampi spazi per i visitatori con al centro una grande statua equestre di re Vittorio. Innegabile che il Sacconi sia stato infuenzato dallo stile dei monumenti dell'antica Grecia e di Roma Imperiale. Probabilmente il “Neoclassico”, a suo giudizio, era il più idoneo a racchiudere i valori risorgimentali e a celebrare Roma Capitale. Morto Sacconi nel 1905, l'opera viene completata da Pio Piacentini ed Ettore Ferrari, che, avevano partecipato al concorso con progetti simili. Il monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II è inaugurato il 4 Giugno 1911, per i festeggiamenti dei 50 anni dall'unità d'Italia, ma i lavori vengono completati solo nel 1935. Nel 1921, il Vittoriano si aggiudica l'appellattivo di “Altare della Patria” e diventa luogo di sepoltura del “Milite Ignoto”, per rappresentare tutti i soldati morti in battaglia per la patria. La salma che il 4 novembre 1921, con una cerimonia pubblica, viene collocata sotto il monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II, è quella di un soldato sconosciuto, che una madre che ha perso il figlio nel primo conflitto mondiale, ha scelto tra undici bare di soldati non identificati. Il Milite Ignoto viene vegliato giorno e notte da un picchetto d'onore. L'Altare della Patria, ancora oggi, viene chiamato dai romani: “macchina da scrivere” per il suo stile. Certo non è uno dei monumeti di più belli di Roma, ma la collocazione del Milite Ignoto, dà un tocco di umanità a un luogo decisamente freddo per lo stile, falsamente associato al fascimo, forse perché di qui passò la marcia su Roma.
