Piazza del Campidoglio è la prima piazza della Roma “moderna”, dovuta al genio di Michelangelo, sorge sul colle Capitolino (Capitolium), sede di un antico villaggio e luogo dedicato a molti templi alle divinità pagane. Nel 1536, in occasione della visita a Roma dell'imperatore di Spagna Carlo V, Papa Paolo III commissionò a Michelangelo la sistemazione complessiva della piazza. Che da tempo era in stato di abbandono. L'architetto fiorentino realizzò un elegante podio per la statua equestre di Marco Aurelio, collocata al centro del colle nel 1537. Inoltre, il Buonarroti disegnò un'imponente scalinata a larghi gradoni, la "Cordonata", che consentiva un'agevole salita anche ai cavalieri, culminante con la solenne balaustra, sormontata da classici gruppi marmorei qui sistemati nei decenni successivi. Intorno al 1546, Michelangelo realizzò la facciata del Palazzo Senatorio (sfondo della visuale principale) che ospita il Consiglio Comunale della città, con una scala frontale a due rampe, cornici della splendida fontana. La torre campanaria di Palazzo Senatorio, costruita su progetto di Martino Longhi il Vecchio nell'ultimo quarto del Cinquecento, custodiva la famosa “campana patarina”, presa in guerra dai Romani ai Viterbesi nel 1200 e usata per annunciare eventi storici o circostanze importanti, come l'elezione del pontefice, la sua incoronazione o morte, il passaggio del corteo papale. L'odierna campana risale all'Ottocento ma continua a essere chiamata patarina e suona in occasione del natale di Roma il 21 aprile e dell'elezione del sindaco. Sempre a Michelangelo si deve la ristrutturazione di Palazzo dei Conservatori e l'inizio di un secondo palazzo, Palazzo Nuovo (oggi sede del primo museo pubblico al mondo aperto nel 1734, i Musei Capitolini) posto di fronte al primo, in modo da delimitare la piazza su tre lati. Il Palazzo Senatorio fu ultimato dopo la morte di Michelangelo da Giacomo della Porta, mentre il secondo da Carlo Rainaldi. I lavori terminarono nel 1655. Malgrado l'avvicendarsi di diversi architetti, Piazza del Campidoglio presenta una mirabile unità stilistica.(da Roma Turistica)
