Ponte di San Michele noto anche come ponte di Paderno fu costruito fra il 1887 e il 1889 per mettere in collegamento il comparto economico del milanese e quello della bergamasca, divisi dal fiume Adda. Il suo progettista fu l'ingegnere svizzero Jules Rothlisberger che all'epoca aveva poco più di 30 anni. In molti si erano fatti avanti per ottenere quella commessa, ma alla fine chi riuscì a spuntarla, anche grazie a un progetto ardito e spregiudicato che prevedeva di realizzare un ponte su di un'unica campata, fu Rothlisberger. I dati tecnici dicono che il ponte è lungo 266 metri e che si trova ad un'altezza di 85 metri rispetto alla quota del fiume. Ha una struttura ad arco, realizzata interamente con travi inchiodate con due livelli di percorribilità, sopra le auto, sotto i treni. Dal punto di vista storico ingegneristico il ponte è un capolavoro di archeologia industriale italiana, nonché una delle più notevoli strutture realizzate dall'ingegneria ottocentesca e per alcuni è paragonabile alla Torre Eiffel, costruita negli stessi anni. Entrambe le strutture, all'epoca della loro costruzione, divennero il simbolo del trionfo industriale per i rispettivi paesi. All'epoca della sua costruzione, il ponte San Michele aveva pochi rivali: aveva l'arco più grande del mondo ed era il quinto in totale per ampiezza. Guardandolo, il paragone con la Torre Eiffel è immediato, ed effettivamente le due costruzioni condividono sia l'epoca di costruzione che la tecnica. Sono entrambe composte da travi inchiodate. La leggenda vuole che l'ingegnere svizzero si sarebbe suicidato gettandosi dal ponte pochi giorni prima del collaudo, per paura che qualcosa andasse storto. In realtà, morì nella sua casa per colpa di una polmonite dopo oltre 20 anni dall'inaugurazione. Non si ferma il percorso per il riconoscimento UNESCO del Ponte San Michele che è inserito nella Nomina transnazionale dei grandi ponti ad arco del XIX secolo per la lista del patrimonio UNESCO.
