L'hocco maggiore è un grande cracide delle Americhe Centrale e Merdionale, dal Messico all'Ecuador. È un uccello piuttosto diffidente che vive nelle foreste tropicali umide e si nutre principalmente di frutta ma anche di piccoli invertebrati. Le femmine sono polimorfe, di solito rossicce con testa barrata. Attualmente l'hocco maggiore è in notevole declino a causa della perdita dell'habitat e della caccia. La specie è perciò compresa nella lista rossa IUCN, classificata come “vulnerabile”. Laguna del Lagarto Eco-Lodge, Provincia di Alajuela, Giugno 2019.
