Così il senato di Venezia approva nel giorno 29 marzo 1516." ... Con questo succinto ed invero chiarissimo editto il governo della Serenissima stabiliva nella piccola insula circondata da un anello di canali la prima residenza coatta per cittadini di fede ebraica; nel Ghetto, termine che dalla città lagunare si sarebbe poi tristemente diffuso in tutta Europa, la reclusione perdurò sino all'arrivo delle truppe napoleoniche, nel 1797. Storia amara e dolorosa quella del Ghetto veneziano, ma che non ha scalfito il forte e radicato legame che la comunità ebraica ha nei secoli intrecciato col tessuto sociale ed economico della città: ancora oggi nel più ampio perimetro costituito, all'interno del sestiere Cannaregio, dalle aree del Ghetto Nuovo, del Ghetto Vecchio e del Ghetto Nuovissimo, si possono ammirare ben cinque Sinagoghe o Scuole che costituiscono vanto e senso di appartenenza delle diverse nazioni ebraiche, ciascuna con i suoi rituali e con proprie finalità educative ed assistenziali. Un tuffo nella dimensione storica e culturale del Ghetto di Venezia è tuttora esperienza emotivamente intensa e dovrebbe risultare tappa obbligata nel corso di una visita alla città ...
