Nome Volgare: Vanessa io o occhio di pavone. Dimensioni: apertura alare 40-60 mm. Descrizione: farfalla dalla livrea inconfondibile. Ali frastagliate dal colore di fondo rosso mattone con grandi macchie ocellate. Il rovescio delle ali è bruno scuro screziato. Quando disturbata, la Vanessa io, apre di scatto le ali mostrando i colori vivaci del dorso disorientando i predatori. I bruchi, neri con macchioline bianche, sono gregari e vivono sull'ortica riparati in tele di seta da loro stessi prodotte. Distribuzione e habitat: diffusa e comune in tutta Italia, isole comprese, nei prati fioriti, radure e giardini. Dal limite del mare fin oltre i 2000 metri di quota. Periodo di attività: gli adulti sono presenti, da giugno ad ottobre, con 2 generazioni. Individui isolati si incontrano in ogni periodo dell'anno. (Per scattare questa foto ho dovuto attraversare una distesa di ortiche, e mi sono tappato le orecchie per non sentirle, ma ne è valsa la pena, la più bella Vanessa io che abbia mai visto)
