La nostra sistemazione sul Grappa era assai difficile perché eravamo ormai ridotti alle ultime propaggini montane verso la pianura, tanto che il Gen. Conrad definì la nostra condizione: "quella di un naufrago aggrappato ad una tavola di salvataggio, per cui sarebbe bastato mozzargli le dita per vederlo annegare". Ma doveva fare i conti con la tenacia e il valore dei nostri soldati. Venne aperta nella viva roccia, al di sotto della cima del massiccio, la famosa galleria Vittorio Emanuele III. L'opera - vero capolavoro d'ingegneria militare - fu dotata di formidabili postazioni di artiglieria in caverna e di sbocchi offensivi per i contrattacchi. Il piano nemico prevedeva di sferrare con una armata - la 11a - l'attacco principale dagli Altopiani e dal Grappa per giungere, attraverso la piana di Vicenza, alle spalle delle nostre difese sul Piave che la 5 e 6 Armata austro - ungarica avrebbero attaccato frontalmente. PS: questo pdr è stato fatto nel 2015 per la ricorrenza del Centenario della Prima Grande Guerra, Vale79 ne ha fatto uno nel 2016 simile in b.n. lei lo sa e la saluto. Come saluto Alberto Parolin che ne ha fatto una bella versione al tramonto.
