Male white-backed woodpecker sent on December 19, 2021 (9:26) by Marco Cirillo. 50 comments, 1398 views. [retina]

con Canon EF 1.4x III, 1/1000 f/9.0, ISO 800, tripod. Parco Nazionale Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, Italy. Specie: Dendrocopos medius

Crop 12% #Wild

Incredible the experience you have lived, a truly unique situation that has as protagonists two subjects unobtainable :-o :-o
Excellent shots as always
Sincere congratulations

Marco thanks you answered me
I also have some shots of the female and the vertex is completely black ...
I had the doubt if it was a mixed pair that the mezzano could be female, but you confirm that you saw the female of the white-backed that has as a dimorphism precisely the black head is therefore distinguishable, then the intruder is the mezzano who knows how he faced the nest

Sigismondi, I did not understand that you were referring to sexual dimorphism.... yes, I have some shots with the female of the whiteback overlooking the nest and there is no doubt that it was her, as soon as I have time I place one .... thanks again, hello

I recount this episode of last spring.
I was photographing from a considerable distance a well-known nest of Black Woodpecker, certainly occupied by the female in hatching and with the male in continuous comings and goings with imbeccata.
Indeptly a green woodpecker arrived and entered the cavity remaining there about twenty seconds and then leaving quietly after facing ...
I asked a ranger for an explanation but he could not give it to me, except justifying the incident as a simple curiosity of the "green"...
In my galleries you will find photos of this observation.

Thank you Giampaolo for your testimony, and I take this opportunity to report what a friend of mine who in turn has a ranger friend in the PNA told me: that half-year-old red woodpecker had been repeatedly spotted near and in front of the nest of the white-backed woodpecker, but no one can give a sensible explanation .... hello and thanks again

Emanuele, Claudio... thank you very much, comments and likes very welcome. Claudio, to think that after a few minutes the sun went away to make way for a thick haze that ruined all the photos of the white back .... what a cake!!!!

A truly exceptional event, as far as I tried to understand I could not find a logical explanation, I can only say ... excellent images, of course the surprises in nature are endless.
