Il monumento in onore dei genitori di S. Francesco è stato ideato e voluto da padre Felice Rossetti francescano minore conventuale. La sua realizzazione si è resa possibile grazie alle offerte di alcuni devoti del santo ed in particolare alla collaborazione del Cav. Francesco Gabelli. Le statue in bronzo, opere dello scultore viterbese Roberto Joppolo rappresentano i due personaggi, in abiti dell'epoca, nel momento in cui Francesco viene lasciato libero di seguire il comando ricevuto dal crocifisso di S. Damiano: “Francesco, và, ripara la mia casa che, come vedi, è tutta in rovina”. Secondo il racconto dei primi biografi: durante la prigionia di Francesco nella casa paterna, “Pica, rapita da materno amore, un giorno ruppe le catene e lo lasciò andar via libero”. Dopo la rinunzia del figlio, compiuta dinanzi al vescovo della città, “Pietro si alzò, presi i denari e i vestiti, se ne tornò a casa”. Il monumento vuole essere un segno tangibile di perenne gratitudine a Pietro di Bernardone e a Madonna Pica per aver donato all'umanità il figlio San Francesco. (Assisi, 4/10/1984)
