Dopo l'offensiva dell'autunno del 1917, l'avanzata delle truppe austo-ungariche si era arrestata. Ora anche la zona di Belluno era occupata dall'imperial-regio esercito della monarchia danubiana. Sulle alture dei Sette Comuni infuriavano ormai le intemperie; lunghe nevicate e piogge torrenziali sferzavano a ritmo alterno le varie postazioni militari. Gli avvallamenti si andavano sempre più riempiendo di neve ed il sole non era più in grado di far fronte ai primi rigori dell'inverno imminente. Nelle trincee della prima linea si trovava una compagnia alpina di Kaisersch ützen. Il monotono servizio quotidiano l'aveva ormai costretta a subire apatica l'irrigidimento d'una estenuante guerra di posizione. Alle poche ore di riposo nell'umidità delle caverne, seguiva un turno di guardia in trincea. Fra i sacchi di sabbia, a distanza irregolare erano collocati gli scudi di protezione con feritorie strette che permettevano ai tiratori scelti di spiare il nemico e di puntare con massima precisione i loro fucili dotati di dispositivi di mira a cannocchiale. Poi sino alle trincee italiane si estendeva la terra di nessuno: 20 – 30 metri in tutto. Anche nel settore italiano sacchi di sabbia e scudi di protezione, coperti però da una serie di cavalli di Frisia; l'intreccio caotico dei reticolati sembrava un infinito nastro arrugginito che avvolgeva alture ed avvallamenti; lo sbarramento, spezzato e dilaniato di giorno, veniva riparato ogni notte. Confini in tempo di Guerra!
