L'avversa conclusione della dodicesima battaglia dell'Isonzo, con la rottura del nostro fronte a Caporetto ed il necessario ripiegamento dell'esercito italiano sul Piave portarono, nel novembre 1917, il Monte Grappa in prima linea a sbarramento del settore montano tra il Brenta e il Piave. La conquista del Grappa, infatti, avrebbe consentito agli austo-ungarici di dilagare nella sottostante pianura veneta e colpire alle spalle il nostro schieramento sul Piave, dal Montello al mare. Il Monte Tomba è una montagna delle prealpi bellunesi alta 868 m. La sua dorsale divide la provincia di Treviso dalla provincia di Belluno che sono messe in comunicazione attraverso la carrozzabile che passa per la cima. Rappresenta un contrafforte orientale del monte Grappa. Durante la prima guerra mondiale (Prima battaglia del Piave) di qui passava il fronte del Grappa dopo la rotta di Caporetto e fu uno dei punti in cui la pressione nemica si fece più sentire. Gli Imperi Centrali si rivolgevano in particolare contro il triangolo ai cui vertici stavano le cime del Tomba, del Monfenèra e del Cornella. La zona del Tomba fu sottoposta, inoltre, ad una violenta azione di artiglieria (18 novembre 1917), seguita da attacchi e contrattacchi accaniti che contesero il terreno metro per metro finché, in dicembre, gli Austro-Ungarici retrocedettero. Quando, nel giugno 1918, essi ripresero l'offensiva (Seconda battaglia del Piave), il monte Tomba fu ancora uno dei baluardi più contesi finché, il 30 giugno di quell'anno, passò definitivamente in mano italiana.
