Una mia personale "visione" della Cupola di S. Pietro. All rights reserved. La Cupola di San Pietro poggia su un altro tamburo aperto da sedici finestroni rettangolari separati da altrettanti costoloni: è l'inconfondibile cupola della Basilica di San Pietro. La cupola venne costruita in soli due anni dall'architetto Giacomo della Porta e, ad oggi, rappresenta uno degli elementi architettonici più belli della basilica stessa. Egli aveva studiato e preso spunto dai disegni di Michelangelo per creare un qualcosa di sensazionale, senza termini di paragone: essa venne realizzata tra il 1588 ed il 1593 e venne cinta con catene di ferro. La decorazione interna della cupola costituisce sicuramente la parte più accattivante dell'elemento architettonico stesso. Questa è stata realizzata secondo l'accurata tecnica del mosaico, proprio come la maggior parte delle raffigurazioni presenti nell'edificio e venne eseguita per volontà di papa Clemente VIII; essa presenta scene col Cristo, i papi, i Santi e gli apostoli. Infine, la scalinata che permette di raggiungere la cima è stata realizzata in cotto ferentinante, con un particolare disegno a listoni.
