Da Ponte Pietra lo sguardo verso il quartiere di Borgo Trento regala un'istantanea che sembra appartenere a Venezia. L'ampia ansa del fiume Adige (dove sino al 1935 si trovava la spina di case sulla riva) specchia la cupola della chiesa di San Giorgio in Braida ritornata a splendere con il restauro concluso nell'autunno 2018. Il monumento sanmicheliano misura 14 metri di diametro e ha un'altezza di 7 metri e mezzo dalla centina alla sommità. Il tiburio (la struttura che copre la superficie curva) poggia su un tamburo costruito con due strati di mattoni laterizi. La copertura in piombo sarà più volte rinnovata sino al 1604. In epoca austriaca sarà sostituita (lo ricorda una incisione che riporta l'anno 1847) con una composta da lamine di rame. Tutti gli interventi sono stati registrati sulle lastre di rivestimento della lanterna e le incisioni sono ancora leggibili. Le nuove lastre di rame sono state imbrunite, in accordo con la Sovrintendenza, seguendo un'antica ricetta rimasta segreta e rinvenuta in un quaderno. L'intervento è stato pensato per restituire un aspetto pressoché inalterato del rivestimento ed è simile a un invecchiamento di circa 6/7 anni. La precedente colorazione tendente al verde si avrà nel tempo con l'ossidazione del rame. La struttura in larice, invece, essendo in buono stato di conservazione è stata mantenuta. La cupola progettata nella prima metà del Cinquecento (nel 1442 il monastero passò ai canonici di San Giorgio in Alga, una piccola isola di Venezia) dall'architetto Michele Sanmicheli è stata descritta come «un'opera unica» che impreziosisce una chiesa definita dallo scrittore, poeta e drammaturgo tedesco Johann Wolfgang von Ghoete (Francoforte sul Meno 1749 - Weimar 1832) «una galleria d'arte» per le opere custodite al suo interno.
