Con il percorso a ritroso del tour guidato al Duomo siamo arrivati alle terrazze panoramiche da dove si può ammirare una prospettiva diversa della cupola. Nei singoli spicchi dell'ottagono si notano buche dall'alto in basso, ciascuna di sezione quadrata di un braccio per un braccio e misuranti la lunghezza di sei braccia, hanno una specifica funzione, "il respiro segreto del Cupolone".Una delle cose più straordinarie è che la cupola, costituita da due calotte l'una dentro l'altra, è lei stessa un elemento di autoregolamentazione come lo sono oggi i doppi vetri delle finestre. Insomma un sistema di climatizzazione studiato cinque secoli fa. Siamo all'interno della Cupola del Brunelleschi, che ci racconta un'altra storia di un capolavoro che è anche meraviglia (è la più grande cupola in muratura al mondo) e dai suoi 114 metri domina «La città del Giglio». L'aria condizionata del Brunelleschi, se così possiamo chiamarla con grande rispetto, è un sistema di areazione dalla doppia intercapedine che, unico al mondo, regala freschezza nelle estati più torride per poi trasformarsi in un riscaldamento naturale d'inverno.
