Il borgo di Calcata è uno dei borghi abbandonati più belli d'Italia. Intorno agli anni '30 del 1900 gran parte della popolazione lasciò il paese che si stava sgretolando lentamente. Calcata, infatti, condivide con la vicina Civita di Bagnoregio la definizione di “Paese che muore” proprio per il lento ma inevitabile cedimento del tufo su cui è costruito. Il paese doveva essere abbattuto ma per fortuna una legge del 1990 lo salvò. Oggi nel borgo vivono circa 70 residenti, italiani e stranieri che hanno scelto Calcata per una vita più tranquilla. L'abbandono ha permesso al borgo di mantenersi intatto: a partire dagli anni '60 molti artisti si sono innamorati di Calcata scegliendola come luogo di vita e di lavoro
