Il laghetto di bauxite si trova a sud di Otranto ( LE ) nei pressi della baia delle Orte . Si tratta di una cava di estrazione della bauxite , minerale dal quale si ricava l'alluminio . La bauxite , estratta per circa un ventennio negli anni '60-'70 , veniva imbarcata nel porto cittadino in direzione di Marghera dove veniva lavorata . La cava venne definitivamente abbandonata nel 1976 . La presenza di una falda freatica, incontrata durante la fase dello scavo, ha determinato la formazione di un piccolo laghetto. La zona circostante si è quindi arricchita di piante acquatiche e paludose come la cannuccia di palude . Il contrasto cromatico tra il verde smeraldo dell' acqua e il rosso ruggine dei calanchi scavati dalle piogge è decisamente suggestivo .
