Il lago Pistono è uno dei cinque laghi del comprensorio della Serra d'Ivrea ; situato nel comune di Montalto Dora , è luogo di partenza per un bellissimo trekking a piedi o in mountain bike che , passando per le famose "terre ballerine" (terreni percorribili ma curiosamente tremolanti , ultime vestigia di antichissime torbiere) porta a fare il giro dei laghi ; a seguito di recenti scoperte (reperti del Neolitico) il sito ospita un percorso archeologico , con la ricostruzione di una palafitta. Domina il lago dal monte Crovero il bellissimo castello di Montalto , risalente alla prima metà del dodicesimo secolo e restaurato nel 1890 da Alfredo d'Andrade . La fortezza aveva una notevole importanza strategica in quanto situato sulla via tra Ivrea e Aosta e religiosa , in quanto si trova sulla via Francigena . Nel 1344 passò ai Savoia e nel 1403 ai De Jordano di Bard . Numerosi signorie governarono il paese di Montalto Dora e nel 1712 Vittorio Amedeo di Savoia fece dono del castello (che aveva subìto gravi danni nel 1641 dopo un assedio) al barone Filiberto Antonio di Vallesa , una famiglia originaria della valle di Gressoney . In seguito , il castello passò al conte Severino dei Baroni di Casana che nel 1890 diede il via a importanti lavori di restauro , affidati anche al già citato d'Andrade , sino a che , nel 1957 , il castello fu acquistato dalla società immobiliare "Castello di Montalto" che ne curò i restauri e la valorizzazione . Il castello è visitabile , su appuntamento , contattando il Comune di Montalto Dora .
