Nei miei primi viaggi in Egitto ho raccontato l'emozione e il momento mediatico dello “stupore”, della “meraviglia” e anche del rapimento estetico ed emotivo, difronte a monumenti che sfidano i secoli e sono lì fieri a raccontare un passato di gloria e di civiltà ma anche di schiavitù e di potere. Questa volta, invece, ho ceduto all'ambizione velleitaria, forse, di scrivere con le immagini una sorta di reportage di vita quotidiana degli egiziani di oggi. E' stato bellissimo filtrare attraverso l'obiettivo centinaia e centinaia di situazioni, per noi europei, inconcepibili, è stato un bagno di benessere in un mondo non contaminato dall'ansia e dallo stress delle nostre giornate di vita europea. Il bello di questo Paese è che si presenta come un paese dai mille contrasti, da una parte contaminato dall'occidente e dai suoi usi e costumi, dall'altra quel suo restare fedele alla “tradizione”, quella sua autenticità di Paese dove convivono i silenzi sacri dei monumenti e la frenesia ed il chiasso delle grandi città, dei palazzi paludati, delle cattedrali lussuose del turismo. Insomma la lotta per la sopravvivenza di una tradizione che gioco-forza sposa gli scenari del nuovo millennio. In realtà, l'Egitto rimane ancor oggi un paese a vocazione contadina, basta far correre lo sguardo sulla campagna nilotica per rendersi conto di quanto ancora questo Paese rimanga attaccato al suo fiume, al suo ambiente paesaggistico naturale, con i suoi scorci lungo il Nilo, caratterizzato dalle palme, dal ragazzino che pungola il bue, che fa girare le ruote dei canali di irrigazione, dalle sue case di fango e paglia, animato dalla presenza dei commercianti che lungo le vie dei bazaar si portano sulle spalle il loro negozio ambulante. Strade, sentieri percorsi a fatica con il loro carico prezioso, e te li trovi ovunque, sbucano nelle strade principali, nelle stradine fangose di un villaggio nubiano, nelle piazza e viuzze disastrate di Edfu, animando un palcoscenico di vita che, spesso risulta incomprensibile a noi occidentali e che pure ha in sé i segni inequivocabili di una logica precisa. Edfu ti mette a nudo in modo anche violento la vera realtà di questo Paese, tocchi con mano la sua povertà, le sue case fatiscenti, i suoi negozi e negozietti sporchi e con i vetri spesso rotti, la sua piazza del mercato, e i suoi vicoli affollati e pieni di varia e dipinta umanità con i loro costumi. Si mischiano a centinaia, cristiani e mussulmani, ti vengono incontro a frotte, adulti, bambini, ognuno con il suo carico di merce che cerca di venderti per la sopravvivenza.
