La casa automobilistica Lancia venne fondata a Torino nel 1906 da Vincenzo Lancia (1881-1937) che poi nel 1930 come socio darà pure vita... sempre a Torino... alla Società Anonima Carrozzeria Pinin Farina (poi Pininfarina). Il Reparto Corse da prima denominato Scuderia Lancia... e che poi diventarà Squadra Corse HF (High Fidelity) Lancia... venne invece fondato nel 1951 da Gianni Lancia (1924-2014)... figlio di Vincenzo... colui che sceglierà l'elefantino come simbolo per le vetture impegnate nelle competizioni sportive rifacendosi alla mitologia orientale dove l'elefante con la proboscide protesa in avanti è considerato un simbolo vittorioso. Ed è quì... nel Reparto Corse che... nel 1968... l'allora direttore sportivo Cesare Fiorio insieme all'ex pilota e collaudatore Claudio Maglioli (1940-2012) decise di dare vita ad una nuova vettura che potesse gareggiare nella categoria riservata alle vetture Sport... cercando di contenere le spese. Così presero una Lancia Fulvia Coupè HF oramai in disuso... vettura che aveva gareggiato nei Rallye... e le eliminarono completamente la parte superiore dell'abitacolo trasformando così la vettura da Coupé in una Barchetta Monoposto. Il motore originale dotato di 4 cilindri a V stretta di circa 12° di 1401 cm3 venne sostituito con uno simile maggiorato a 1584 cm3 e che mentre originariamente erogava 145 cavalli di potenza dopo un'adeguata elaborazione arrivò a svilupparne 162. Avendo abbassato il cofano anteriore del motore fu riprogettato il collettore di aspirazione a cui erano collegati i 2 carburatori a doppio corpo ed anche il passo della vettura venne accorciato di circa 15 centimetri. Di questa Barchetta vennero costruiti 3 esemplari e vennero denominati F&M Special... dove F e M sono le iniziali dei cognomi di Fiorio e Maglioli... coloro che la avevano ideata. Dal 1969 al 1972 le vetture parteciparono a diverse competizioni come la Targa Florio e la 1000 Chilometri del Nurburgring e furono condotte anche da Sandro Munari "Il Drago" . Negli anni seguenti diversi preparatori più o meno noti si cimentarono nella costruzione di simili vetture ma spessso con risultati per nulla soddisfacenti. La F&M Special visibile in questa fotografia è una delle 2 vetture originali rimaste e la fotografai durante la 3° Manches della Bologna Raticosa 2021, 33° Edizione, manifestazione destinata alle auto d'epoca. Era condotta dal bresciano Giorgio Taglietti che oltre ad esercitare la professione di medico è pure un'apprezzato pilota professionista nelle crono scalate.
