La scultura di dimensioni leggermente superiori al vero, fu rinvenuta tra il 1667 e il 1670 nei pressi della basilica di S.Vitale tra il Quirinale e il Viminale e donata da Benedetto XIV nel 1752. La dea è nuda, ritratta in un gesto sensuale e pudico con le braccia disposte a celare alla vista dello spettatore le armoniose forme del corpo. Gli oggetti che accompagnano la figura, la nudità e la pettinatura alludono al bagno lustrale della divinità. Si tratta di una variante della dea Afrodite creata da Prassitele nel IV. sec. a.C. per il santuario della dea a Cnido.
