L'edificio occupa il sito della casa 1902-2003 di Lenin , che occupò mentre era in esilio editore del quotidiano socialista russo Iskra (Spark). [1] In onore del leader sovietico , inizialmente l'edificio doveva essere chiamato "Corte Lenin". Inoltre l'edificio doveva incorporare il memoriale di Lubetkin a Lenin, che si trovava sul sito di Piazza Holford dal 1942. Tuttavia il monumento si è rivelato impopolare tra il pubblico ed è stato ripetutamente vandalizzato, al punto da richiedere una guardia di polizia 24 ore su 24 . L'austerità del dopoguerra aveva imposto vincoli di bilancio molto maggiori rispetto a Spa Green Estate , il fiore all'occhiello di Tecton , costringendo Lubetkin a spogliare il progetto dei servizi di base che aveva pianificato; non dovevano esserci balconi, centri sociali o scuole materne. Invece Lubetkin ha concentrato le sue energie sullo spazio sociale.
