Una camera di risaia non può essere in pendenza se si vuole evitare che l'acqua scorra via senza essere trattenuta. Deve essere perfettamente in piano. Proprio per garantire questa perfezione si sono via-via adottate tecniche diverse, fino alle sofisticate livellatrici al laser. Per garantire una distribuzione uniforme dell'acqua senza ristagni, dentro la camera di risaia non devono esserci avvallamenti, buchi o depressioni. La superficie deve essere piatta come un biliardo (almeno questo è il tentativo). Ma come si può garantire una superficie piatta in presenza di una pendenza, seppur lieve? Si ricorre all'antichissimo metodo del terrazzamento, utilizzato dagli albori dell'agricoltura in tutti i terreni montuosi e collinari. Si spianano porzioni di terreno, proteggendole a valle con terrapieni. Lo stesso si fa per quelle successive. Il risultato è un paesaggio che per il vercellese sembra fatto di tanti stagni coltivati delimitati da semplici argini, ma che ad uno sguardo più attento rivela invece un ampio sistema di gradoni che indicano da quale parte pende la pianura.
